Very true. I was reading up on one particular design, where TWO
apsherical elements could replace SEVEN traditional elements in a
group.

At that rate, Olympus could have brought the 35-80/2.8 zoom down to
three elements. Which essentially is what it is, anyway, as it is a
heavily modfied triplet.

As to the "improving while stopping down" aspect. I'm not sure I
totally agree with you there. I'm not a lens designer so I can't speak
to specifics, but there are lenses which are known to be "wide-open"
lenses and underperform other lenses when stopped down. I think Leica
makes a couple of those.
