The bottom line is that there are two rays for each blade.  For even 
numbers of blades the rays line up and overlay each other such that you 
see only 6 rays for 6 blades.  For odd numbers of blades such as the 9 
bladed aperture that took the shot in your link the asymmetrical rays 
don't overlay each other so you see all 18 of them.  Taken with a 
9-bladed Leica perhaps?

I don't think there was any soldier cooperation required for the shot. 
He's simply doing what he was supposed to do... aim his mirror at the 
camera to interfere with photography.  Of course, it might have taken a 
bunch of shots to get this one and pausing long enough for the soldier 
to center the reflection on the camera but I'm sure the soldier would 
simply continue to do his job as best he could throughout the photo session.
