Chuck, we've been seeing the same thing here with the composite
materials. Mold and fungus has been a problem on some decks. Just like
in polyester-based fiberglass used in boats, this stuff travels up
inside via microscopic cracks, but unlike normal wood, moisture is
trapped inside and doesn't wick outward. Any attempt at killing off
the bad stuff is pretty well thwarted. There are some new plankings
out now with some form of Microban inside which is supposed to addeess
the issue.
