Iowa is definitely a different animal. The natives are so glad that ANYBODY
is willing to move here that they don't give us carpet-baggers too much
grief. Of course, there are pockets of lunacy, but generally most people in
Iowa are either from out of state or from elsewhere in the state. (Did you
know that Iowa has historically had the highest percentage of working women
in the USA?)
It does help that our "white-person" history only goes back about 150 years
here. Since the 1890's or so, the population of Iowa, except for the major
cities and where RAGBRAI happens to be on any given night, has continued to
decline. Nowadays, it's something like one farmer per thousand acres. A far
cry from the original 40 acres per man.
