Konrad Beck's description in the link you provided is the best I have seen,

Thus I assume:
"TN" is the assembly plant which is, I believe, Tatsuno.
"G" is the year, with "A" being 1983 (maybe 1981) thus 1987/1989
"5" is the month - may be May, maybe ;-)
