I have found that the two samples of the DZ 14-54mm that I have owned held
their focus point while zooming much closer following servicing at Olympus
NY*. In my opinion it is not intended to be varifocal design but it is
simply a tolerance of alignment matter. Most domestic users relying on AF
probably wouldn't notice it as an issue but those like us who are more
attuned to details do notice.

*One was involved in tripod tip over and the zoom mechanism was replaced,
the other had a chunk of lint inside.

Just a side note on focal-length shortening with close-focusing...

The PanaLeica 14-50 has one of the most aggressive focal-length change I've
ever seen with focus adjustment.

The DZ 14-54 stays almost the same, but it is most certainly a varifocal
design as you have to readjust focus after any focal-length change, but the
14-50 keeps the focus the same when you change focal-length, but the
focal-length changes when you focus.
