What the raw converter must do is anything that alters pixel brightness 
since you want that work done while you're in 14 bit mode or however 
many significant bits your raw file gives you.  Once all the pixels have 
had their brightness jiggled you can turn anything else over to an 
editor and do it as a JPEG.
