Thanks wayne, for posting an example

I have no doubts that those images look sharp at full resolution,
although
by stopping the lens down to f/11 or f/16 you are nowhere near
exploiting the full
resolution of this lens (of course, at the benefit of gaining DOF).

According to you guys (and my own tests start to confirm this,
although insights are slower
when working with film and non-solid tripods) some of these lenses
(e.g. the 20mm f/3.5) has
such high resolution so as to be already diffraction-limited at wide
open aperture. I must admit,
I am totally, totally blown away at the performance of the little 20mm
wide open, I think I need to
do testing with even finer-grained film (e.g. Pan F) to pull
everything out of the image it
projects.

I was simply wondering if the 80mm is also diffraction-limited wide
open already, or if does need stopping
down (if so, it can't be far). I would just love to see some real
numbers on this.

In the longer term, personal experimentation will of course tell all,
but I basically want to determine
whether, for some experimental images I'd like to make, if I were to
use an 80mm f/4.0, at what aperture it
produces optimum resolution, and what that resolution is, and whether
I can extract more resolution than what
I can capture on Pan F by using of of the super-high resolution B&W
films by Rollei, Efke, etc.

I am talking about 20x30in or so optical prints of quite flat
subjects, so no need to stop down m assively.
(stretching the capabilities of 35mm, yes - but it's the sweetheart
format of Macro for film shooters)

regards,
Dawid
