I had never heard of Grant Wood, despite I (still ... ) think I have
an average knowledge about painting and painters.
Also, I thought everyone knew of Joaquín Torres García and his school
of 'constructivism' - until I had to explain who he was to Chuck - and
did a little search into wiki .... ;-)

We Uruguayans are also too prone to substitute 'Uruguay' for 'world' -
as each individual may think his own thoughts are general rules unless
the opposite is demonstrated - and frequently still remains not
completely convinced.

I've come to the provisional hypothesis that this widespread illogical
substitution obeys to the need of founding an identity: individual or
collective (in the latter form, it might be called 'patriotic /
patriotism').
Andrew is back. A few minutes ago he wrote:
"Being missed is so much more pleasant than being hit." - I'll put
this as an example only, A few people feel, and then think, just the
opposite. Their identity is therefore founded.

Personally, I only partially agree with the thought of having to raise
awareness of your country's responsibility for the decline of (popular
?) culture throughout the world. It has had great influence, and sound
contributions during s.XX specially, and these are not unseen or
unrecognized. But as a collective, and specially in scientific areas,
the tendency to ignore what's been said and thought before a
'patriotic' reformulation was done, is quite obvious and undesirable /
counterproductive. I could put a dozen of examples, and make this an
even more boring post.

Time to go to sleep ... I'll take some Miles Davis to my bedroom
(Seven Steps to Heaven - Complete 1962-63 sessions), just to listen
how much contemporary culture has been spoiled by your country's
cultural and economical and ideological hegemony ... ;-) C'mon, Jazz
needs no external reference, it has a value by itself - I may take
some world-wide known Alfredo Zitarrosa
<http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfredo_Zitarrosa>, but just not in the
mood for Alfredo, these days when our unbeatable democratic beliefs
are prelude to Presidential elections in November.

:-)

Fernando.
