That would certainly explain a lot of problems.  I hadn't considered it 
since I didn't think Windows would offer to format a small 1GB device as 
NTFS.  I assumed it would pick FAT16 (a better choice than FAT32 for 2GB 
or less, at least for access that if principally sequential).  But I 
don't know for sure that Windows would make those (to me) logical 
choices.  Best thing is to never write anything to a flash card using 
your computer.  It presupposes some smarts in the camera that may not exist.
