Somewhere in the world it's Feb 12, 2009 by now, so I hope it is not
jumping the gun to post a few photos:

Three are photos I shot in 2005 with the C8080 of a statue of Lincoln
and his son, Tad. The statue is located on the Iowa state capitol
grounds in Des Moines, Iowa, and is apparently the only statue of
Lincoln and any one of his three sons. Lincoln lost his son, Willie,
in early 1862, and all Washington mourned with the first family when
Willie died. There's a good story about Tad. He apparently had a pet
turkey who roamed at will and was out among some Pennsylvania soldiers
who were quartered on the White House grounds. It was election time
(1864) and the soldiers were voting by absentee ballot. This was
crucial to Lincoln, who counted on much support from the soldiers
through absentee voting. As Tad and Lincoln watched the soldiers
voting from one of the windows, Lincoln asked Tad if the turkey,
wandering among the troops, intended to vote too. "No," said Tad,
"he's not of age." It was noted by an observer at the time (Noah
Brooks) that Lincoln so dearly loved the boy that "for days thereafter
he took pride in relating this anecdote ."

I also included my two favorite photos by Alexander Gardner, which
were taken within a couple of months, and possibly -- in the case of
the broken-glass photo -- within days, of his death. He surely bore
the sorrows of a nation.
