I don't know if it's from his own writings or someone who was quoting
him. It's from my memory of something I read some 20 or 30 years ago.
While I don't know exactly where it comes from I know it was related to
his fer-de-lance and rattlesnake bites as related here:
<http://books.google.com/books?id=QyV0CLz5drQC&pg=PA243&lpg=PA243&dq=%22ARCHIE+CARR%22+%22fer+de+lance%22&source=bl&ots=3ukzcKlF4u&sig=DA7KwDvdT3wGTPTDD3wWUgqwQ_A&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result#PPA243,M1>
The fer-de-lance bite was dry but the rattlesnake bite was not. The
page on this book by Davis quotes something he says about that
experience in reference #45 but the reference is not given in this
Google preview. It's possible it was just an essay about his
experiences in Costa Rica which is where I think he had his run-in with
the fer-de-lance. I don't think I've ever read a complete book by him.
