The reason is due to the chemical difference in the different
type of battery material.

Ni-Cad batteries have a lower internal resistance due to the
materials used in that type of batteries construction.

>From the electrical view, Ni-Cad batteries have a lower internal
resistance which means that they are capable of delivering
a much higher current into the same external resistive load
in comparision to Carbon/Zinc batteries, this is for low
resistive loads such as small motors and devices like
earlier model flash's etc. In relation to the flash you will
probably find that the thyristor or other device the flash
utilises doesnt have sufficient heat release, or the electronics
were simply not designed to have the higher current that
NiCad batteries can deliver run through there circuits.

It's also the same reason that you shouldnt use NiCad's
in female vibrators, NiCad's overheat the motor leading
to open circuit coils as there is nowere for the heat build
up to escape due to the enclosed nature of the motor,
there for it is recommended to use Zinc/Carbon batteries
as there higher internal resistance will limit the current
drawn from the battery, and will also limit the speed so
the motor's carbon contacts dont fracture.

More than you wanted to know hey :-)

Cheers
