I've seen samples from Photomatix. (Most overdone by overzealous users
IMHO) But that's not the fault of the software. The reason I don't own
it is that I've not been willing to pay the freight... at least so far.

After I wrote the note below I started playing with PhotoShop HDR and
discovered that it was capable of doing what I wanted once I understood
what PS HDR was really all about and the limitations imposed by the
current version. PS HDR simply builds a 32 bit image file encompassing
the full dynamic range of the set of images fed in... period. It does
not attempt to compress the range to the visible or printable range of
an 8 bit JPEG. Processing the 32 bit image is rather limited by a
restricted tool set and one can't even make a duplicate layer.

What I did discover, however, is that after converting down to 16 bit I
was able to use the shadow/highlight control to accomplish what I
wanted. I had taken several image sequences of a sunset on the cape.
But when the exposure was short enough to capture the color in the sky
the foreground was nearly black. When the foreground had visible detail
the sky was washed out. I left the overall exposure of the 32 bit image
such that the sky showed good color. That was preserved in the 16 bit
image and the shadow/highlight control was able to pull the shadows up
enough to show the desired degree of foreground detail. Then, adjusting
the color balance in the control to 90% from the default of 50 put some
redness into the foreground which approximated my recollection of the
scene. Anyhow, I got exactly what I wanted. The histogram on the dark
side shows some choppiness from raising the brightness level there but I
don't believe that will be visible in a print.
