The effect is inevitable. I tried to explain it all starting here
<http://zone-10.com/cmsm/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=149&Itemid=1&limit=1&limitstart=1>.

At the end, I talk about sharpening for display size. It doesn't look
like you did that to this image, or perhaps under did it.

Images with find detail displayed at this size are a problem, as some of
the detail is smaller than one pixel wide to begin with, as in the trees
lower right. That means sharpening will add likely visible artifacts. So
it becomes a matter of balancing apparent sharpness against artifacts

"Display size" is tricky, as well, as the visual size depends on pixel
pitch and how close to the screen the viewer is. I've done a couple of
sharpened versions of this image. If I sit up in my chair so my screen
is about 3 ft. from my eyes, the more sharpened one looks good to me. If
I then lean forward to about 18 in. from the screen, it looks too
crunchy, and the lesser sharpening looks pretty good.

If I get even closer, I can see halos on the middle one, but it still
looks a bit sharper than the original.
