Probably they feel the weight of the 405 or the 400 is unacceptable.
However some people use a majestic head which is also quite heavy but
can be found used from time to time at a low cost. A few use a Ries
head (not geared). It appears most LF users consider  tripod heads to
be compromised for field work.

It's good to hear that the gear mechanism can be inexpensively
replaced on the 410 and that it gave you the desired smooth operation.
It's hard to imagine a hand adjusted gear assembly wearing but I guess
some of the heads could be quite old. I wonder if the lubricants have
a dramatic impact on the apparent play.
