I don't do any direct patient treatment any more, but when I
went through training the treatment for methanol poisoning was gastric
lavage/induced emesis if it was within 2 hours of ingestion. Afterwards,
sodium bicarbonate was given to prevent severe acidosis of the blood. If
the blood level of methanol was between 20-50 mg/dl then intravenous
ethanol was administered. This was done for the very reason that Piers
mentioned ie. competitive binding by ethanol for the enzyme that
degrades alcohols. If the blood methanol level is above 50mg/dl then
hemodialysis is performed.

I don't recall any earlier controversy, Jan, but to be picky, I don't
think
ethanol is an antidote. Rather, any ethanol present is preferentially
oxidised by the same enzyme which oxidises methanol to produce the
toxins.
With the ethanol you just get a headache. Without the ethanol, you get
the
toxins - but you can't then administer ethanol as an antidote.
Now we can progress to discuss our preferred ethanols...

On the up side, the antidote to methanol poising is ethanol. So after
cleaning your sensor, have a couple stiff drinks, just in case.
(There was some controversy last time I posted the ethanol antidote, but
I
have since double-checked it with the MSDS and other sources.
