CF cards DO FAIL. However, I suspect that more fail from
insertion/removal than anything else. Pins get bent inside the
cameras/readers and the card connectors don't last forever either.

I bought a microdrive about 18 months ago. It has performed
flawlessly-albiet, a bit slower than a 128x CF. I figure that
hard-drives are a pretty mature technology and the funny thing is
that everybody is so fearful of them being soooooo fragile, but there
is little empirical evidence that they really are. Just don't
squeeze them and handle them by the edges. Mine pretty much lives in
my Minolta A1.

All these items basically have the same real MTBF rating--200,000
hours. (you cannot effectively test beyond that, so higher ratings
are estimated). In reality, what this MTBF rating means is that one
out of every 200,000 will fail each hour.

Are you feeling lucky, punk?
