I believe I would get variation on my CRT as well, though probably not 
as much as a LCD, if I profiled from different areas.

Are you implying that the 226 is so accurate straight out of the box 
that it doesn't need calibration or that you feel profiling in general 
is a waste of time?  If the later I would strongly disagree with you. 
Using a spyder for profiling, even my low end consumer spyder, made a 
huge difference in photo editing with my Optiquest CRT as now, there is 
a very close match between my monitor and a print from a Canon i960. 
The default monitor's default settings were much to warm before calibration.
