Being aware of my 'Murkin lack of international sophistication and
awareness of irony, if this is an ironic question, accept my slight
chuckle and skip the rest.

Being aware that Tom is 'Murkin too, without a great history of
incipient European slyness, I also respond to the comment as
straightforward.

I see the D3 as aimed primarily at the 1D III, with the price and all
the high speed, focus and fps, emphasis. The sports and related subject
market is one with which Nikon is familiar and where they can see
gaining ground. By almost meeting the 1D III on fps burst length and
trumping it on mps, 12 to 10, with a bigger sensor, they come on very
strong on basik performance for that market. If their AF delivers and C
can't get theirs going properly, big boost for N in a good sized part of
the pro market.

The 1Ds III is whole different kettle of fish, aimed at different
markets than either of the above. In addition to simple bragging
rights, and don't discount the effect of the top model on sales
throughout a line, they are after the digi MF market and landscape work.

The 5D is also 'only' 12 mps, 0.7 more, to be exact, but that's just
meaningless in real world terms, and it's effective res on their smaller
sensor size area is also 5.1 mp. But, it's a very different 5 mp than on
a small sensor. The bigger pixels do make a difference, My old 300D is
older sensor system tech, so I'm not sure just that it means, but I've
proved for myself that the 5.1 mp of that area of the 5D resolves
noticeably more detail than the 6.1 of the 300D, and with lower noise
and better dynamic range.

As you say elsewhere, they've sold so many Dx lenses that they sort of
have to accommodate them. At least people who bought C EF-S lenses knew
about the limitations for already existing FF bodies. But it's nice to
know that those 5.1 mp will probably be very good ones.
