I embarked on a little long lens test, which has run into life and 
stalled for now. One of the things I have tried is the 300/4.5, with and 
without the 2X-A.

I don't know about the far edges, but the combo works well in the 
central area, which is all you will care about for this project. Tests 
happen to have been done at about 50 ft.
