Brian, this has nothing to do with Norton. It is usually an indication of
XP trying to install critical updates. If automatic updates are turned on,
XP will connect to Microsoft and check for any critical security updates,
whenever it turns on and an internet connection is available. You can
disable the auto feature and check on them manually (not a bad idea).
Generally, you can right click on the shield to see what is happening. It
will typically say that an update (critical) needs to be installed.
