Huge street numbers;
according to a friend who used to live in Oregon, it was the number of yards
to a certain corner or something like that.
In rural new Zealand mostly it is the number of metres divided by 10 to a
major junction.
All to aid fire, pulleys, and ambulance vehicles to find the places in an
emergency; the just have to set their trip odometer to zero, and drive.
