An alternative to consider is Lulu.  Gene Wilburn, who may still be a
list-member, put together this fine tome:

Which stimulated the production of this centenary volume for our camera
club:

The cost (USD15 per copy + shipping) for a 64-page 8.5x11" full colour
paperback is pretty impressive, and the quality of printing is entirely
acceptable.  There are one or two traps to look out for, I'll be glad to
expound if there is any interest.

There used to be a small machine sold that would bind papers together to
form a book. A quick google search didn't turn it up so it may have
disappeared. The velo bind machine is still around. Separating the binding
process from the photo printing would let you get whatever quality you
wanted.

The google search did turn up a number of companies that will bind a single
or as many books as you want. One example
