Walt,

I have not had this problem as I don't own this particular lens. I would
suggest dismantling the mount of the hood and cleaning all the parts with
alcohol (assuming that it is mostly resistant to damage from this). Once it
is all dry reassemble without any lubricants as they will tend to trap any
dirt that does get into the grooves. Then clean the bayonet on the front of
the lens taking care to keep the flow of liquid under control so it doesn't
get into the rest of the lens. Q-tips and very, very small amounts of fluid
would be wise.
