 Hi,
I pinged Oly on that question a couple weeks ago and they actually bothered to
answer. It appears they had use on the future models in mind. It may be that
Jay? gets the gold star for that hypothesis, assuming the person in customer
care had his facts straight. (thought the T10 was out much earlier, though
maybe designed with later models in mind)

"Dear Michael,

Thank you for your inquiry. It has to do with the camera it was designed to
be used with. The T-10 Flash was introduced along with the OM-4 camera
system. The OM-4 had a built-in spot meter. This required a second mirror
to split the light for both the TTL average and the spot meter. A dual
mirror system as these cameras are normally referred to, are found on any
slr with either a built-in spot meter or auto focus capability.

Dual mirrors need to split the light at a specific angel in order for both
meters to read properly. A linear polarizing filter, with its single angle
of reflection, will not integrate properly with the dual mirror and the
light meter, making exposure accuracy impossible. A circular polarizer, on
the other hand, does not have a single point or reflection angle and
therefore, will be read properly by the light meters.

While you cannot use a linear polarizer at all with the OM-4, you can fully
use a circular with both the single mirror OM-2 and the dual mirror OM-4.

Sincerely,

Customer Care Department,
Olympus Imaging America Inc."
