That would be an interesting way to focus and track on dogs running full
speed around an agility course while firing at 8.5fps :-)

The c*n*n multi point AF is primarily about achieving and holding focus on
moving subjects; you use the centre point to identify and lock onto the
subject and then all of the points are automatically used to track it.
Provided that you keep the subject within the focusing area (about a third
of the viewfinder) it will normally retain focus whatever direction the
subject goes... great fun! You can even zoom the lens while its holding
focus.

It is, of course, total overkill for static subjects - I restrict it to a
measly 9 points for that. There are 8 on the outside perimeter of the
focusing area; simply use the wheel to scroll around them or the 'assist'
button to get back to the centre point.

My A1 has a zillion AF points (makes the Canon pale in
comparison). You get really lazy with it. To manually select a
point I press the button in the middle of the 4-way controller
and just steer the pointer around. Otherwise I use the AF+MF
functionality.

There are days that I really dislike the limited AF points in
the E-1. But at least you can manual focus.
