I've had problems too. It won't autofocus on the sky well or on
undifferentiated darkness. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've
ever manually focused on either. :/

I recently had a problem focusing with DZ 50-200 on a large patch of
vegetation in the distance. It was very undifferentiated as well.
When I moved over to some rocks a bit to the side, it focused fine.

I have also noticed that it sometimes doesn't focus on water well.
More undifferentiated stuff. That's the theme, for me anyway.

I have not run into this, although I rarely change WB from 5300, which
serves for most of my shooting.
