To further muddy the waters, film grain isn't single-layer
thick, nor are they "flat".  Film grain on film is similar to
pepper. When you open up a packet of pepper and dump it on your
mashed potatoes, you see that they are elongated. Some land this
way, others land that way, some stick up, others operlap.
Placement of the grain is random.  Furthermore, not all grains
are same sized. The more random in size the film grain, the
wider the toe and shoulder of the film response.
