The front element of the 18/3.5 is very close to the filter ring of the 
lens. You quite likely couldn't attach your non-olympus ring to the lens. If 
you succeeded you would probably vignette. The 18mm/3.5 has a 100 degree 
angle of view. The olympus 49-72 ring actually looks like a nicely made 
metal, super wide lens hood. How much value it has could be debated since 
with that angle of view it seems like the sun is either behind you or in the 
image ;-)

what is special about an Olympus ring? My black laquered metal 49-72 ring
cost less than $15 [that's Canadian $] and works just fine. Move up to a
brass Heliopan ring and you get a nickel change out of $20.
