[OM] UK Customs & Excise (was: unbelievable E-1 deal on the bay)

Suggestion:

Get it delivered to a friend for testing, rather than shipped direct to
the UK. Get the friend to post the manuals (worthless) -- they can even
go printed paper rate.

Then get same friend as sent you the packaging, to ship camera, just
wrapped in bubble wrap and WITHOUT original box, etc. and clearly NOT
new. Get them to put a receipt in for funds received for an amount that
has to be plausible for a 2nd hand digital camera (which, technically,
it now is, of course). If the price is not plausible, they won't believe
you. Likewise any additional lenses, shipped SEPARATELY.

The things depreciate so fast, I reckon you could save the VAT on about
half the value, possibly more.

2nd hand values make things much, much more difficult for them, so
they're likely to believe you rather than do their own research, so long
as your values are plausible. Old Zuiko lenses, for example, do not seem
to be their speciality... thankfully.

I do not condone evading tax, of course. It's merely that getting the
camera checked by a friend in the US first seems to make a great deal of
sense, even if it has the unfortunate effect of diminishing the thing's
value prior to it entering the UK. And no-one is obliged to pay any more
tax than they have to.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Simon
