Hi Paul,
I have considered shooting all colour and then converting to b&w but only
because it is becoming increasingly difficult to get b&w processed reliably.
I think, I know many will disagree, that a good b&w shot beats a good colour
shot hands down and for that reason I have always preferred b&w. So why do I
shoot colour? To rationalise having two bodies for my two favoured brands.
It's not just about results though. Olympus OM's and the other brand do it
for me in a way that defies logic or analysis. I cannot sustain an argument
that Min*lta, N*kon Can*n etc are not as good but I have no interest in them
whatsoever. Likewise digital.
It seems likely that film quality has been surpassed by digital and they are
now a better tool for photography, all those pro's can't be wrong, but that
doesn't make the quality of OM's suddenly worse overnight just because they
have been overtaken for convenience or resolution of lines per millimetre.
Sorry about that, got off the subject for a moment :-) The point I am
making is that it is all about personal preference. For me it will always be
OM's and the other brand shooting b&w film even if there are other ways of
getting there with better quality as the end result. The quality I get from
my gear it plenty good enough for my eyesight, period. A demo shot from
another camera, whether be it digital or film, that enlarges a nasal hair
from a full length portrait and proves conclusively that it is better
resolved than my OM stuff does nothing for me all.
The new cameras with their better resolution (conceded) and convenience
(conceded) do not have the aesthetic of my preferred cameras and for me b&w
film is the perfect partner for them.
To summarise. I am an irrational OM/Le*ca junkie :-)
