I had a hell of a time with this also, Paul. The way I finally made it
work was to follow the instructions from Olympus *to the letter*
regarding the order of installation of the various bits of software and
updates (you did download the updates from the Olympus site, I hope) as
well as *all* of the required reboots. Also, the camera has to be in
"Control" mode (selectable from the menus) *before* you hook up the
firewire connection.
Even so, it did NOT work with only Viewer loaded, I had to load (and
update) Olympus Studio as well, in order to get the "Control" portion of
the software. I have not gone back and tried using Viewer only to reach
the update site. I figured that since I finally got the update just
fine, I wasn't gonna push my luck.

I tried to update the firmware in my E1 last night. I'm connected via
firewire to my XP box. Opened up Viewer, clicked on the "update"
option, and it kept telling me that no camera was found.
Yet, it shows up in Explorer and I was able to download the images, so
it is recognized by Windows.
Is there a configuration menu option that I'm missing somewhere? I'm at
work right now, so I can't try it until I get home.
