It will be just the same problem with the 50/3.5, only worse because you
can increase magnification even more with the longer focusing extension
of the lens, swhich further shortens teh working distance. To get
greater working distance, you need a longer focal length. Then to get
the same magnification, you need more lens extention. Take a look at the
tables here
<http://olympus.dementia.org/eSIF/om-sif/macrophotogroup/auto_tube_65-116.htm>.
The ones in the PDF manual available at the bottom of the page are more
readable. There is much more useful stuff in the Olympus Way tables on
Mark's site <http://olympus.dementia.org/Hardware/PDFs/OM_Way-tables.pdf>.

I use the 50/3.5 for work on a copy stand. Outdoors, a longer focal
length is useful. There are a lot of great thrid party macro lenses in
the 90+ mm range. The Zuiko 90/2 is a great lens in many ways, but only
focuses to 1:2 on its own. The Zuiko 135/4.5 is an excellent lens with
good working distance. However, because of its longer focal length, it
doesn't quite get to 1:2 on the 65-116 Auto Tube. You need bellow to get
greater magnification.

I very much like the Kiron 105/2.8, which focuses from infinity to 1:1
directly and is optically excellent. Tamron, Vivitar and Tokina have all
made excellent 90mm macro lenses, some of which focus to 1:1 directly
The combo Curtis just posted about buying "At the same sale, I picked up
a Tamron SP 90mm f/2.5 Macro (52B) with attached Tamron 01F 2X
converter." is very useful. It makes a 180/5 lens that focuses directly
to 1:1, which allows close-up shots without scaring the bugs - or
without them bugging you
