Greetings All,
I usually try to avoid the OT posts so I'll try to be brief. The
different reference ranges cited in this post can be explained by the fact that
most of the World, for medical lab results, switched to a system called SI
(Systeme Internationale) back around 1977 after it was officially adopted by
WHO. In fact I thought it was used world-wide (with the exception of the US),
so I was a bit surprised when I read that it is still in use in Uruguay (we
Western hemispheric-types have to stick together you know ;^). There are
bacically two ways to quantify blood chemistry results: by weight (hence
mg/deciliter) or by molecular count (mmol/liter in SI Units). A mole being 6.02
x 10*23 molecules of a substance. I know, that's more than you want to know. I
remember having to learn the SI units as a resident in Pathology just when I
had become comfortable with the standard metric units. (damned Europeans are
ALWAYS messing me up 8^O ). For the life of me I could never get a satisfactory
answer as to why SI was an improvement.
Regarding Chris, his cholesterol level and Profibe: now I don't claim
to be an expert in such things, so you may want to consult your cardiologist. A
total cholesterol of 5.6 is only minimally elevated, so I would forgo the
Statin drugs for now unless you have some very strong risk factors ( such as a
lot of early deaths in your family due to heart disease, "Metabolic Syndrome",
etc.). An hour of vigorous exercise (80% of your maximum cardiac output) 3-4
times per week combined with a steep reduction in saturated fat (save the
rasher of bacon for one breakfast a week) should do the trick. I'm speaking
from experience here. I'm 50 and last year found my TC to be 6.4. After two
months on this regimen I'm down to 4.8 and dropped 12 lbs. to boot.
Chuck's comment about measuring cholesterol is dead on. There are
multiple methodologies so you must stick with the same lab, have your blood
drawn at the same time of day, and be sure to do the same amount of pre-test
fasting each time.
        Best of luck.

Charlie

Well I have been advised, politely, by my
doc to lose around 7kg (15.43lb according to my Mac calculator,
referring to pounds as "US pounds" for some reason) and to go down

And Fernando Gonzales replied:

Funny thing, here in Uruguay we consider Total Cholesterol (CT) to be
normal
within 120 to 240 mg/dl (miligrams = 1/1000 g. - deciliter = 1/10 l.)

I suspect some strange method of measure, for example
milli-ounces/gallon...
remember, there was a space satellite going wrong because ESA used cm and
NASA inches...
