[OM] Obituary

It happened to me. I never thought it would happen to me. I am a nice guy.
We went to the bird sanctuary on Mother's Day. I took some good photos around
the visitor's center and then on the trail leading to "Hanging Rock", a giant
rock by the sea. We stopped close to the edge to enjoy the view and I quickly
put the camera on the tripod so I can take advantage of the short break and
started to take pictures of stuff that looked promising...
I took a look at wife and she also had her camera out (digital). I left my
camera unattended for just a second, some wind gust came and I heard what
sounded like a camera hitting a rock...turned around and it was true...
The camera had fallen on its lens. When I picked it up, the hood was in
pieces, the filter also, but amazingly, the lens front element, didn't even
have a scratch. Looked through the viewfinder and turned the focusing ring,
then the zoom ring...everything seemed ok. Then did it again and the lens
retracted so far back that even the filter ring went inside. I decided that
this needs further investigation.
When we got home, I took out the filter ring and repeated the previous
exercise. Nope, that did not resurrect it. The image in the viewfinder is
blurry and the zoom ring does not go through its whole range. Life is over.
My Sigma 24-70 I always bragged about is gone. I am a wide angle kinda guy and
the only substitutes I have for it are a MIJ 50/1.8 and 28/3.5 Silvernose and
they are not even half as good.
I tried to find it on the net, but couldn't. Life is over.
So I am on a major crossroad. Looking at my cameras, I have aCLA'd OM1 with a
stubborn lightmeter that refuses to fucking work. I have an OM PC which I
hate, because it exhibits all the usual OM PC symptoms of not metering right
whenever the light is subdued (but the ESP does a great job if it is nice and
shiny out). It is prettiest OM IMHO, but I am not using it...would have sold
it long time ago if it were not "mint" with all the boxes guarantee card,
manual, lens info literature etc. all the stuff that came with.
To make things worse, my ageing flatbed got some dust on the inside part of the
glass and I have to figure out how to open it and clean....
I am extremely handy, but hate fixing things and probably won't attempt to fix
anything...
I guess I am a prime candidate for digital, but can't make up my mind. I was
excited about the EVOLT, but it seems that the 8080 Wideangle takes better pix
according to dpreview. I held it once and it did not feel right at all.
Thought about the E-1, but have to see, the 4/3 viewfinder shape looked a
little strange at first and in addition, it won't look good on my resume if
wife reads that in one year I managed to buy a house, furniture and an
expensive camera.
But that's enough for me, this is an obituary after all and a farewell to a
good friend who's helped a lot and was always there when needed.
Boris
