Sounds like $3000 of lens there Jim. Nice gift! But tagging it as a gift
would have made no difference to the duty+tax payable, she would have been
billed the same.

I sold an expensive lens to a lady in the UK and she had to pay about 350
pounds in duty fees. She claimed she had asked me to tag the lens as a gift
but I had never gotten the request. She was not very happy with me but she
liked the lens. Now everything I send there is a "gift" for someone
someplace sometime so it gets tagged that way. /jmac

Probably just my ignorance (which is virtually boundless) but why would VAT
be due? The camera is not being bought/sold. On a couple of occasions I have
bought stuff from the USA & the seller has marked the item as a gift on the
customs document (not that I'd ever ask them to do such a thing) - in which
case no VAT/dues were payable.

Could take around five years that way and excludes non-travellers. Plus
no-one is going to want to be first receiver in Europe given VAT rates or
last despatcher to another continent, given postage rates. Sorry to be a wet
blanket, but I've had the experience! Go light and small! Or have a
competition for the list where all pix have to be taken with OM1/50-1.8? Of
an identical item?
