The two specialist screens for nacro are the 1-11 and 1-12. Sort-of quoting
the eSIF:

The 1-11 has a cross hairs spot surrounded by a finely ground matte area.
For focusing in low magnification close-up photography, use the matte area,
and in greater than life size macrophotography use the double cross hairs by
first correcting your diopter using a dioptric correction lens or Varimagni
Finder so that each line of the double cross hairs can be seen clearly and
separately. Then bring the subject into focus.

The 1-12 is a transparent screen offering an unusually bright finder image.
Ideal for macrophotography of 1:1 or over, and for photomicrography. This
one is used in just the same way as the 1-11 is used with the cross hairs -
you can't focus directly on the screen, because the clear screen produces an
aerial image.

BUT in my experience/opinion you would do just as well to use a plain ground
glass such as 1-4, 1-8, or better still a 2-4 (though that will require a
meter recalibration on OM-1 and OM-2).

Again, thanks everyone. I feel much better armed now. I came across the
expression 'stop down focus' somewhere on photo.net (I think) but it never
occurred to me that it was a misnomer. I probably read it 20 more times as
the much more correct 'stop down metering' but the original stuck in my
head. Thinking of it as stop down metering sure makes a heckofa lot more
sense. The good news is that my meter doesn't work, so I'll use my handheld
and I'll have to learn to accommodate the fall off from the extension tube.
The reversed lenses are a good idea...I'll try that out one of these days.
In the meantime I'll save up my pennies for a 50 3.5 and a 25mm extension
tube. I should be able to have some fun with that for a while. FWIW, I'm
interested primarily in static objects, so pursuing little buggies that flee
won't be an issue. At least not yet. I even have a spare OM-1 body; I could
devote that to the macro lens and invest in a focusing screen to boot.
What's the word on screens?

I truly appreciate the help.

Cheers,
Matthew Born
