You have received some good advice on your question. I find that when
photographing people against a snowy background 1.5 to 2 stops overexposure
usually works. Of course, when doing that you lose definition of the snow
surface. Actually recording the texture of the snow can be difficult. The
safest way is to bracket exposures. Shadows will be much more severe on film
than seen by your eyes.

Be careful where you go on steep terrain and on glaciers. If you don't know
about glacier and avalanche safety, go with someone who does and has the
needed equipment. Rescue from a crevasse is very difficult with two people
involved and not easy with three or more. Going in one when you're are alone
may very well be fatal. Snow avalanches are real killers. A cross-country
skier was killed about eight miles from my mountain place yesterday. The
depth of this slide was only two feet but it killed one person and seriously
injured another. The place is called Hell Roaring Canyon and it lived up to
the name yesterday.

Subject: [OM] Shooting Glaciers and Snow

Hi everyone:

I am plannign a trip to the Patagonia in Chile, including some
promising visits to glaciers and that sort of stuff.

I have no experience in shooting in the Snow or similar conditions
(you know that in Spain it is rain that mainly falls in the plain,
and I am a Mediterranean coast person). Obviously a 50 ASA seems
necessary for bright light, but I would also like to do some B&W. Any
filters? Any tricks? (yes, I plan to keep the OM4 warm and battery
fed under the coat)

Regards,

Enrique
