I'd like to point out that if you use one of the journaling filesystems
on Linux (ext3, reiser, etc.) and you have a crash your files and 
filesystem are retained intact. Then when you reboot everything is restored,
no data lost, no files corrupted, almost immediately. You won't even notice 
any slowdown on the reboot. Like others have said, Linux has improved
drastically over the last few years. If I were to recommend a
distribution, it would be SuSE. I don't use it, but I have heard rave
things about it.
