Well this is a pleasant surprise upon my return home from a christmas
eve party with friends.

Brian, I thank you for the plug, and wish I could take any credit
whatsoever for the design. However, I cannot. When I made my site over a
while back, I did so using software that most any of you can obtain and
use (although I did this on my own little server and--unfortunately
bottom end--DSL line, many commercial, inexpensive web services allow
use of all the components named below). Here's how it was done:

1. Install php for server-side scripting and dynamic page production
capabilities http://www.php.net/
2. Install MySQL for the database capability http://www.mysql.com/

Both 1 and 2 above are often done by many web services as "standard
applications" for their clients.

3. Install XOOPS to handle the entire site layout and design, as well as
all the functions http://www.xoops.org/
4. Set-up all the above, and then browse the XOOPS site for a theme I
liked. Install and turn on same.
5. For my own meager photo efforts, install the XOOPS-compatible version
of Gallery (there are two other XOOPS-compatible photo album modules to
choose from as well, but Gallery was the best choice for me when I got
working on this). Note: there are some adjunct "pieces" required for
Gallery, email me if you have trouble and I'll help where I can. The
original version of Gallery can be run on its own, and is here:
http://gallery.menalto.com

I happen to run my site on Win2K/IIS, which provided some challenges.
It's far, far easier to do on a LAMP or WAMP host. All the software
mentioned above is freely available, most under the GNU public license.
Frankly, XOOPS makes this so darned easy, after initial install and
set-up, that running the site is now something I can mostly do
on-the-fly whenever I feel the urge to add or change something. XOOPS
also allows registered users to create their own content. Assuming I've
enabled it (and I have for the majority of functions), and haven't
screwed anything up, any registered user can add messages, photos,
links, files for download, etc.

And so we come to the one catch: because of the fact that there are
those out there who have found the next spamming frontier: spamming via
"open" comments on web sites; I only allow comments (uploads, link
creation, etc) if you register and create yourself a log-in. Most of the
read-only functions are open--no log-in of any sort required--'tis only
functions that allow "write" that are restricted to registered users
only.

I do have a backlog of recent sites mentioned on the Olympus list to
enter. Simply no free time lately. However, registered users can add
links and all sorts of other stuff, as mentioned. Feel free, folks,
that's one of the reasons why I set up the site.

Registration? A snap. Create your own profile and the system will send
you a verification message. Verify and you're good to go. Email me
directly if you have problems. No data you enter to register goes
anywhere but in the database which "runs" the site, which I use for no
other purpose. Heck, I'm too lazy to even mail out anything to
registered users :-) (Although one can choose to have the system itself
notify you of changes).

Hi all

Good morning on this festival day.

I have just discovered Scott Gomez' new site. I heartily recommend you
visit
to see sites of old and new friends. Go to

http://petroglyph.crestline.ca.us/modules/mylinks/

and take the link

OM Photo Sites (93)

Very enjoyable, and an inspiration.to do better on-line design.

And Scott, if you are reading this, congratulations on making work what
seems like a complex procedure, and putting the hard work in to it.

A couple of comments if I may;

I did not see Graham Battison's site there (maybe I missed it)

and, I could not get the comments engine to work, even though I tried
two
browsers.

I wanted to add a comment to the entry on Wayne Harridge's entry, to the

effect that his great image "The Long Road Home" is the most evocative
image I know. It is absolutely wonderful.

If you can find a few moments some time I'd appreciate that being added
for
me.

Cheers, Brian Swale
