No reason not to try it Evan, depending on what you are expecting. To get
1:1 repro ration (A subject of 24x36mm which fills the frame) you would
normally need 100mm of extension with a 100mm lens at infinity focus - so
don't expect 1:1. Equally, a 50mm lens needs 50mm of extension - but the
shorter the focal length, the closer the subject is to the front of the lens
- you can end up with your subject 'bathed' in some mighty big shadows. And
if not using a lens designed for macro work, you may want to try reversing
the lens on the body.

As a total tube rookie, and a very inexperienced macro photographer, is
there a reason why I can't/should use my 100/2.8 + tubes for macro shots? I
like the idea of the working distance that this setup would give, but have

How much one needs a "matched set" depends on how finicky one is about
having perfectly matched optics in them. Me? I'm very finicky about
optical performance (downright AR), but for some reason have never worried
about perfectly matched extension tube optics (and likely never will).
