I quite agree. I spent over 3 decades working with the top people at a
very large company. Although not an accountant, I did, contributed to
and/or evaluated financial analysis and projections for many business
proposals from equipment purchases to a joint venture (still
successful). No matter how much research you do, the projections are
just guesses compounded upon supposition. Those who do the spade work
may use their biases in favor or against an idea, but in the end, it's
those who are responsible for the costs and results who must weigh all
the info available with their own experience and intuition and make the
decision. In the real world, personal likes and dislikes, personal
relationships, occasional insipred smarts, lots of commonplace fear,
greed, envy stupidity, etc. etc. figure in the mix too.
I personally know of a CEO who made some terrible decisions that had
enormous long term consequences for his company, employees and himself,
basically because his father and grandfather had made his company the
biggest, his mother was still around to rag on him, and he just couldn't
make the sensible, necessary decision to get out of some markets because
it meant making the company smaller than what he took over. Doing the
smart thing was emotionally impossible for him. The downsizing happened
later, in a much uglier way than would have been possible at the right
time. And it was done under duress by somebody else.
