If it gets sold and purchased 20 times since it was stolen, it's probabably
still yours. Suppose the last guy bought it from KEH. He still looses it.
You can bet he's going to complain loudly since he bought it from a
reputable company. So normally you'll need a police report. If it passes
through a police department as lost property, you might not be able to get
it back. IRRC there is some provision for keeping found property if a
reasonable attempt is made to find the owner and verify it is not stolen.
Putting it in the custody of the police department is a reasonable attempt
to make sure it is not stolen and that the owner can claim it if he lost it.
Keep in mind though that for example most banks say if you don't contact
them for 5 years, your money becomes theirs. I believe California responded
by telling the bank if the bank takes the money they have to give it to
California.

Some companies check items sent in for repair against a list of reported
"missing". It may be re-united with the owner without a police report if the
guy who sent it in either found it or stole it (a co-worker got his
calculator back).
