As John noted, in the shop we first set "infinity" on the lens to the film
plane using a collimator, but unless the camera has been dropped or the lens
focus setting disturbed, it shouldn't be off. Then we adjust the
rangefinder.

The "short" adjustment almost never needs to be changed unless someone has
moved it first. Infinity is adjusted by turning the screw on the bottom of
the rangefinder revealed when the plug above the film rails is unscrewed.

If your horizontal is off, that's a bit more difficult -- so much that if
it's just a little off, don't bother! You'll want to adjust that first
before adjusting the rangefinder's infinity setting since this will affect
both horizontal and vertical (distance) adjustments. As a practical matter
you'll want to remove the top cover and the plate that shows the speeds in
the finder to get to the adjustment as well.

The horizontal adjustment is a "-" screw seen through the top of the frame
that holds the smaller 45 degree moving mirror. It will be sealed. You
will want to soak it with solvent (acetone, MEK, etc.) to remove as much as
the sealant as possible, then soak it some more. Then using the largest,
sharpest screwdriver that will fit, unscrew the adjustment, being careful
not to damage the head -- work slowly, firmly, and carefully! Go ahead and
unscrew it a ways so you can clean off the threads a bit, then screw it back
down.

Now turn it until your horizontal lines line up. Sometimes I'll turn the
camera on end (vertically) and check it that way. You'll find it to be a
very delicate adjustment -- it may be just a little off, but if you feel the
screw turn, it will be too much! You will swear that all you did was
_think_ of turning the screw, and that will be just right!

Good luck!
