I tried different settings but ended up back at the default settings. I
shoot Raw most of the time and batch convert with Olympus Studio.
Studio defaults to the in camera settings, but you can change them if
you need to when you convert from Raw with Sudio. If you only shoot in
jpeg, then the settings become more important.
Probably the most useful setting for me is the S.AF+MF set to ON. That
allows for manual tweaking of the focus in single auto-focus mode. I
also use the AEL button in single auto focus for focus lock (mode 3).
With the most recent firmware update (1.2) this mode allows you to
adjust the locked focus with a half depress of the shutter button (and
with S.AF_+MF ON). This is particular useful with telephoto shoots
through limbs and branches, where there are many targets the camera
might lock onto.
Be careful with the AEL button as it can get accidentally pressed. My
original concern about the smaller viewfinder magnification has not
been a problem and I can focus the E-1 as well as the om-4t and 2-4
screen. Only thing lacking is a split prism focus like a 2-13 screen.
When the light is dim and the auto-focus is not working well, manual
focus is pretty good, better than I expected.
There is nothing like a viewfinder that shows what you are taking a
picture of. With the C5050, I still feel like I'm guessing when I frame
a shot. Unfortunately, good optical viewfinders like an OM are becoming
relics of the past.
