Most of these kids thrive on these competitions and they do learn a lot from
the activity. Things like teamwork, concentration, and teaching others can
be helpful in other aspects of life. This works when the teachers and
parents nurture the kids and support them. It fails when the teachers and
parents pressure the kids to excel in doing something in excess of what the
kids want to do. There are dance classes for kids that just want to have
fun. One of my granddaughters loves dancing. She works out four times a week
as a minimum. I asked her one day if she had considered dancing as a career
choice. She said, "No way, I want to be a dentist." /jmac

I just don't think kids should be in that kind of situation. Just one
father's opinion. Now let's see what my older granddaughter's first
ballet performance is like. Her parents swear it was her idea, not
theirs and the class was against their advice. She certainly doesn't
seem anxious about it, just excited.
