[OM] Signing prints?

Does anyone have any words of wisdom about what to use when signing a print 
on the mat or when signing on the border of the print.  I'm assuming a pencil 
for the mat. What number lead hardness?  What would one use on the print? A 
Sharpie?  Bill Barber
