Thanks, Jim. Chuck Norcott also offered great advice which I followed but
the thing had obviously been in that state for some time so needed some more
suicidal effort. And I did just as you suggested and the two bits joined up!
But one wonders if having a limit of reading of 30deg C is really very smart
when our temperatures lately in Sydney have been in excess of this. (Of
course the Paterson thermometer was made in England :-))

Well, at the risk of ruining it entirely, you could heat it up slowly and
carefully until the two fluids join together, just, then cool it quickly
before you blow the top right off the tube. That's the only way I can think
of to do it, unless maybe you centrifuge it around in a real fast spinner...
again probably breaking the tube. But maybe worth a try if the only
alternative is to buy another anyway.
