I just replaced the cluster in a nicad pack, using the last of my Maxx
cells. I noticed something very odd. The nicad already had a replacement
(non-Olympus) cluster in it and it appears the cluster was made backwards.
That is, the cluster drops in only one way to fit within the casing and
around the tripod socket lug. In this case, the + end of the cluster ended
up situated over the negative solder point, -- end over the positive
contact. So, it got wired in backwards, destroying the cluster.
The positive end of the nicad cluster has a raised bump, or nipple and an
extra insulator built in. In this case, insulator is black, as on all the
Maxx clusters I've used. The negative end is just flat metal with the
solder tab tack welded on. If you have one, always check with a VOM meter,
even if it's only to determine polarity. Here's a picture showing an old
Olympus set, a good Maxx & the backward cluster (which may be a Maxx too).
